I know that one of the major dilemmas when it comes to grow tents is whether it makes more sense to buy one or to build one. After going through both building a tent and buying several different sized tents, it is my opinion that you are much better off just buying a grow tent that you can assemble. There are several benefits to buying a grow tent including set up time, take down time, re-usability, general functionality, and reflectivity.
Many people decide to build a grow tent rather than buy one purely based on the cost savings. However, when you take everything into consideration, you really get what you pay for. You will still have to dump a decent amount of money into building a good solid grow tent on your materials which would include wood for the frame, mylar for the actual tenting, and zippers for easy access. You may encounter the need for additional materials as well. Then you have to take the time to assemble the grow tent. For me, I look at time as an asset just as valuable if not more valuable than money so here, buying a grow tent that can be easily set up in a matter of minutes has huge advantages to building one. Also, if you move you can easily collapse and reuse the same grow tent in a new location rather than having to demolish the tent you built out of wood/pvc by hand. I recently had to move unexpectedly and it was not fun trying to take everything down. Initially I thought I might be able to reuse some of the materials, but it didn’t end up being the case.
As far as general functionality and reflectivity, nothing compares to a manufactured grow tent. If you build a grow tent out of simple wood and mylar, you will most likely only have one entry point unless you buy a bunch of zippers (which then brings the cost of building it up even more). Only having one entry point can be a real pain if you are trying to water or do something on the other end of the tent. Typically if you buy a grow tent, it will have several entry points, if not an entry point on 3 of 4 sides. The zippers are usually well made and this makes the whole process of using the tent that much more easy. A purchased grow tent also comes with poles that are made to withstand hanging heavy lights, filters, fans and whatever else you might need to keep in the tent. If you build your own, it might be difficult to hang anything from the tent itself because this equipment can end up being pretty damn heavy. Most purchased grow tents also come with an extremely reflective “metallic” interior. This is far superior to the common flat white that most mylar is coated with.
So, taking all of these different aspects into consideration, I would never again build my own grow space. I will always buy a grow tent. It is well worth the money, and you will be able to reuse it over and over again.
